"I am proud to be a trans mother",says the renowned classical dancer Ziya Paval while answering a question regarding her perception of the way society approaches her, at the Kerala Literature Festival. Ziya Paval challenged the patriarchal system when she legally fought for her parenting rights at Kerala high court along with her partner Zahad and they became India`s first natural parents within the transgender community to welcome a child. Arathi P M commented about the contradiction that people might have while inspecting the Indian judiciary where it gives the right to not have a child while it also approves divorce in case the wife refuses to have a child. While discussing about the moral conflicts over the concept of surrogacy, Arathi P M stated that the moral ironies on surrogacy do exist in this society irrespective of that person being a believer, atheist or educated and she also mentioned the insights she gained while researching about surrogate mothers. Women in Kerala who opt for surrogacy are getting paid more than those from other states and they are considering it from the viewpoint of gaining a rapid financial elevation. Society and administration plays a major part in their decision due to its economical and democratical injustice towards citizens. I will not raise my child the way my parents raised us. I will let my child be herself," Ziya replied while answering to Adv. M S Saji`s question regarding a possible isolation to be faced by her child, due to the societal inhibitions in accepting gender identities. Infertility and its perils on the self- esteem of people was also widely discussed by the speakers following which the session concluded with interactions with the audience.
