Ari Sitas is a South African sociologist, a poet and dramatist. His poetic work found a large audience in the anti-apartheid movement and continues to resonate as an exemplar of public engagement. His dialogue with India began with his, “Around the World in 80 Days- the India Section” published by the University of South Africa Press in 2013 and his award-winning lyrical and musical interaction with Indian writers and composers as part of the Insurrections Ensemble that he and Sumangala Damodaran formed in 2010. Their loose adaptation of Aime Cesaire’s Tempest titles “Storming” won this year’s National Humanities Award for Composition and Musical Arrangement in South Africa.
He is also a distinguished sociologist and a recipient of one of the highest orders South Africa confers for his scholarly and creative work: the Order of Mapungubwe.
