A 100-year old peepal tree courtyard-house by the Chaliyar River, Design Ashram was envisioned as a community space for the like-minded.
Comprising of a lounge, ‘The Peepal’ – a semi-open space to accommodate events, ‘The Pod’ – A backpacker’s hostel and ‘The Art Room’ – A gallery space for exhibitions and/or seminars; Design Ashram deviates from the norm and is also home to DAC – the architecture firm that conceived the adaptive re-use of the property. The essence of Gujarathi Street was given due respect when conceptualizing Design Ashram. Visitors catch glimpses of the home from shifting perspectives - some between the dense foliage, some undisturbed by these. From one point to another, the elements that
are emphasized in the facade change, making the journey a treat for the senses.
Design Ashram was opened in 2017 and began having events early in 2018, collaborating and associating with various organizations. They organize weekly and monthly events to provide positive reinforcement to the arts and culture scene in Calicut, like the Book Swap, Open-Mic Wednesdays and Art Workshop. Design Ashram visualizes a vibrant arts and culture scene in Kozhikode and provides a platform for young artists to experiment with their talents. This is also the perfect outlet for people who want to hang loose in the middle of a busy week.
Film-maker Muhsin Parari (Sudani from Nigeria), entrepreneur, antique lover and the founder of Gudham Art Cafe in Calicut, Badaykandi Basheer, popular home cook, and entrepreneur Abida Rasheed, the young writer who penned Varathan, Suhas and Sharfu and many more have shared their stories with the crowd on Wednesday.
Kerala Literature Festival, 2019 works closely with Design Ashram to promote culture, talents and people. To know more about Design Ashram : https://www.facebook.com/pages/Design-Ashram/339103183216502
