Astronauts, scientists along with artists, writers, musicians gather in Kozhikode beach for the intellectual, artistic extravaganza KLF 2019 organized by DC Kizhakemuri from 10th January to 13th January 2019. Discussions, debates, and performances await reformation and soulful rejuvenation for the participants. The fourth edition of KLF features the exemplary astronaut, Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to travel in space.G Madhavan Nair in converse with Rakesh Sharma will enrich the audience with scientific tint and vigour. Moderator, G Madhavan Nair is the former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organization.
Hailing from Pattiyala, Punjab Rakesh Sharma joined the National Defence Academy as Air Force Cadet in 1966 and became test pilot in 1970. Rakesh Sharma persevered to retire as Wing Commander and currently serve as chairman for automated workflow.
His expedition to space for eight days in Salyut 7 space station was a part of a joint program of Indian Space Research Organization and the Soviet Intercosmos Space Program. The gem out of hundred applicants for the Russian program joined two other Soviet cosmonauts aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft which blasted off on April 2, 1984. The crew spent seven days aboard the Salyut Space Station during which they conducted scientific and technical studies, which included 43 experimental sessions.
His famous line "Saare Jahan Se Achha" referring to India viewed from space in reply to Indira Gandhi's query enamoured every Indian's heart. He was also part of war operations against Pakistan. He flew various Mikoyan-Gurevich aircraft starting from 1971 which escalated him to be the Squadron leader and pilot of Indian Air Force.
Turning seventy on the fourth day of KLF, January 13th, Rakesh Sharma's scientific impetus and inspiring personality will add layers of meaning to the literature festival.
